Mantle of the Imperial Guard

This cloak belonged to Centurion Gaius Tenerius of the Fourth Palatine Cohort. He served under Archon Cassian in the Imperial Palace for nineteen years, guarding the eastern galleries.

When the Senate conspirators poisoned the Archon and his family, Tenerius was the only palace guard who refused their gold. They found him the next morning by the bedchamber doors with three crossbow bolts in his chest. The cloak was taken to be burned, but the enchantment held and the fabric would not catch fire.

The new Archon ordered it thrown into the moat. A fisherman pulled it out seven years later. By then, no one remembered the name of Tenerius, or what he had died for.
